Frame study-Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator

Frame Study of Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator"

The Great Dictator is one of Charlie Chaplin's movies with dialogues and sounds.I t is political satire designed with the reflector comic elements. The Great Dictator, American comedy film, released in 1940, that Charlie Chaplin both acted in and directed. Satirizing Adolf Hitler and Nazism and condemning anti-Semitism, it was Chaplin’s most successful film at the box office.

Frame study of 'The Great Dictator'

In this frame we can see that the size of the weapon is very large.so in modern times we also find this type of weapon. If the more weapons our nation has it becomes more powerful nation.Sometimes the greatness of country should be measured by its powerful weapon.

(No knowledge of it's use)

In this frame we find the hierarchical system of society. The power structure flows from upwards to downward. So the the servant has to follow the rules by their authority. Nowadays we see lots of examples in political parties and government bodies.

We all are trapped in this mud.We have many problems and we try to get their solution and we became part of this trap.We must have to help authority one and other way.

Nowadays we also see this in our politicians. To gain power,to gain favour they touch the soft corner of public which is their children. They very well know that how to win people's heart, how to get people's favour. Here the face of Hynkel shows the hypocrisy of politics.

This image is of the shop of Jew.Now this frame demonstrate the predominance prejudice towards Jews.If we look at the historical context of why there is that much hatred towards Jews then we come to know that it is not Hitler who only hates Jews but from middle age it was coming.

Here we can find that the value of other officers. It seems that their value is very low in the eyes of higher officers.

His hunger for power is seen in this frame. This is  image of balloon which is printed as world map.He wants to become great Dictator of the world. But in the second frame it shows that that balloon of world map is brust it means that excessive  hunger of gain power leads towards the destruction of the world.

The word  Liberty is used for replacement of Hynkel with barber fits aptly into this scene as barber is  climbing the stairs instead of Hynken. In the dictatorial government, only layman and working class people can best explain the value of liberty.

So here we find that the speech was given by Barber not by Hynkel. The double role of Chaplin makes significant in the film.
