Thinking Activity:An Astrologer's Day

Hello friends

This is the blog response to the task assigned by Vaidehi Ma’am.We had seen video about the short story `` An Astrologer’s Day by R.K.Narayan in one of the session.Based on this I am going to write my blog. Before giving the answer let us see the short summary of the story.

The short story ‘An Astrologer’s Day’ by R. K. Narayan is a thriller and suspense short story which deals with a single day in the life of an ordinary astrologer who shrewdly tries to dupe people and escape from his guilt. The story not only exposes the fake astrologer but also highlights the gullible and superstitious people who approach him. His day begins like any other day but the day ends with unexpected events. When he is about to wind up his business, he meets a rogue character, Guru Nayak who is a part of the past life of the astrologer. Towards the end, as readers, we receive a shock that Guru Nayak and the astrologer belong to the same native towns. They were once upon a time good friends and had a quarrel one day. The result was that both were into bad company and had a fight. The astrologer tried to kill Guru Nayak by attacking him with a knife and when Guru Nayak fainted, he threw him into a nearby well.

The surrounding darkness seems to offer a refuge to the astrologer. There is an unexpected twist in the tale with the arrival of Guru Nayak on the scene. Gradually the mystery that is hidden in the darkness is unveiled by his questions. Guru Nayak challenges the astrologer’s knowledge. He refuses to go away without getting a satisfactory answer to his questions.

However, the astrologer who is at his wit’s end now decides to face the situation. He displays accurate knowledge about Guru Nayak’s past and is successful in convincing him. In answering the question of Guru Nayak, the astrologer has not only deceived him but also saved himself from his own fate. The author superbly evokes the atmosphere of suspense and irony in the story. The story reveals how appearances are often deceptive. It shows the witty astrologer’s encounter and escape from his former enemy.

👉How movie is faithful to the original short story?

The movie adaptation is quite relevant to the story. But there are many difference we find between original story and video. There are many scene in the video that are not in the original story. If i talk about the character of the astrologer’s daughter. Then her character is missing in the original story while in film her character is very significant. The camera movement speaks about her character very well.Though the plot is going the same with the story so we can say that

👉After watching the movie, have your perception about the short story, characters or situations changed?

It would be hard to say about changed perception.Because the story of the movie and original are same.Character and situations are also same except the scene of his daughter. My perception is changed towards the character of astrologer’s wife.Because in the original story she is quite silent. But in the movie she asked her husband about his business. She did some argument why he was not ready to go to his village.

👉Do you feel ‘aesthetic delight’ while watching the movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If not, can you explain with reasons?

It is very difficult to say either yes or no. but i would like to say yes. Because it happened when the mystery of the main character Gurunanak was solved. While watching I'm very much aware of the relationship between the astrologer and Gurunanak. At the beginning of the film i didn’t aware about what kind of relationship between an Astrologer and Gurunanak. It also happened when the wife of an astrologer asked him to go back to their village and he denied. And why they leave their village. That time also I feel like there is something behind this. But when astrologer were afraid of Gurunanak, something was linked in my mind. I thought there was some connection between them. And later on we see what happened in the past. So that time I feel aesthetic delight.

I also feel aesthetic delight when the scene of the argument between astrologer and his wife.At that time his daughter is listening everything but she didn’t ask her parents. So the question may arise that, Is the character of his daughter significant or not?

👉Does screening of movie help you in better understanding of the short story?

Obviously yes. Because it can be said that

A picture is worth a thousand words

It was good experience of watching the movies.Visuals are always better than reading. And this video was quite appropriate to the main plot.

👉Was there any particular scene or moment in the story that you think was perfect?

Yes, the scene of Gurunayak coming to an astrologer is quite perfect and appropriate.Because we see the whole essence of the story in the film adaptation. All the scenes from movies are interlinked with the original story.

👉If you are the director, what changes would you like to make in the remaking of the movie based on the short story “An Astrologer’s Day” by R.K.Narayan?

As a director of the movie I would like to change some shots of the movie there are……

A I said in a classroom discussion that I will change the character of his wife. Because she is quite silent in the movie.. Because she didn't ask her husband about why he is doing this job, why he is cheating so many people. Instead of resisting, she behaves softly with her husband. She has to be a woman with dignity about the work they are doing. And also about her daughter she also is quite silent. So i might be change the both character.
I might change the mentality of the people of that village. That they will not believe in this kind of superstitions.
And i also try to changed the sequence and will add the scene which will show the reveal of of the character of astrologer.

Thank You
